Lawn care advice that works perfectly in one part of the country can be genuinely wrong in another, and understanding which broad climate zone your lawn falls into is the starting point for almost every other decision in a care program.

Cool-season zones, generally the northern half of the country, are dominated by grasses like Kentucky bluegrass, tall fescue, and perennial ryegrass, which do the bulk of their growing in spring and fall and go through a period of summer stress or semi-dormancy during the hottest months. Fertilization programs here concentrate applications in spring and fall.

Warm-season zones, generally the southern half of the country, are dominated by grasses like Bermuda, zoysia, and St. Augustine, which do the bulk of their growing during the heat of summer and go fully dormant through winter. Fertilization here concentrates from late spring through summer, tapering off well before the first frost.

The transition zone sits between these two regions and is genuinely the most difficult to manage well, because neither cool-season nor warm-season grasses are perfectly suited to its combination of hot, humid summers and cold winters. Programs here often involve tighter monitoring of actual soil temperature and weather conditions rather than a fixed calendar.

Knowing which zone you're in, and choosing a grass type genuinely suited to it, resolves more lawn problems before they start than almost any treatment applied after the fact. A homeowner fighting a lawn that's fundamentally the wrong grass type for their climate zone is working against physics no fertilization program can fully overcome.
